Employee of federal government who are members of Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) or fresh employment with ICAN certificate into the public sector stand to enjoy what i called the two level of entry point as stated below.

1. Entry level with ICAN certificate

2. Advancement/upgrade of ICAN qualified member

1. Entry level with ICAN certificate

This means the moment you are qualified as chartered accountant before gaining employment in public sector, you have a chance to start in GL 10. It will interest you to know that even without first degree, ICAN member will still be considered for employment in the public sector in line with the provision of existing scheme of service. It is only ICAN and other related qualifications prescribed in the scheme that can be considered for civil service appointment. The entry point for every ICAN member is GL 10.

2. Advancement of ICAN qualified members

In this case, ICAN members already in service, whose grade is below GL 10 and got qualified will be advanced or upgraded to Grade level 10. The moment that employee sit for ICAN exams and qualify. He or she is qualified to notify his or her employer of the new qualification.

The magic of ICAN certificate is that someone on GL 8 will be moved to GL 10 in respect of the year of entry. Ordinarily the movement would have taken minimum 6 years if he or she pass confirmation and promotion exam, but with the magic of ICAN he can achieve GL 10 within a year to 2.

This is what the government of Nigeria and ICAN has done for their members. Every student of accountancy in higher institution, graduate accounting and accountants working in the service of federal government should take advantage of this without delay.
